Steeplechase & fashion runway at the VA Gold Cup

My friends and I put on our finest for the 87th running of the Virginia Gold Cup held at Great Meadow in The Plains on Saturday, May 5, in Virginia. The Virginia Gold Cup is a grand spring tradition, as well as a fixture on the Washington social calendar. Run in Fauquier County since 1922 and attended by over 50,000 spectators, this race is one of the largest and most popular sporting events in the greater Washington metropolitan area.

Maybe it was the warm and sunny weather, or the fact that the spring collections were just as vibrant and energized as the julep-fueled crowd in the stands.

But whether you were style-watching in the grass or parading about in the paddocks, on this particular day at Great Meadow in The Plains, there was one bold fashion statement after another.

Big hats are the norm for the women, and loud, colorful jackets and pants, as well as dress shirts is the uniform for men.

The Virginia Gold Cup might not have the prominence of the Kentucky Derby, also held on May 5th, however, its country tradition and enthusiasm of steeplechase races have put Northern Virginia at the epicenter of this enduring sport.

Indeed, it was a wonderful event. It was my first time attending. I hear there’s another similar event in the fall. If so, I plan to go as well.

VA Gold Cup is lots of fun. Didn’t make it this year. But from your shots, I see that it didn’t disappoint.
